Dropped Head Band – Keeps You Looking Forward

The dropped head band is for dropped head syndrome which causes a chin on chest type deformity of varying degrees and can have many causes. It is condition seen with weakness of the neck muscles and results in flexion or forward bending of the head and neck.

Patients usually present with neck pain, difficulty eating and problems looking forward. The band is a solution to collars designed for drop head that can place pressure on the chin. The band is available with an optional cap. It forms a system that enables the user to lift their head with into a more upright and comfortable position. Activities like eating and socializing crucial to quality of life and improvements for those suffering this condition are made more naturally enjoyable and with a greater sense of freedom towards independence.

Dropped Head Syndrome has many causes and is often associated with ALS, Parkinsons Disease as well as Radiation Fibrosis and Degenerative Disease. It results in tired and sore neck muscles as well as the associated poor head posture.

The gentleman presented suffers from Parkinson’s Disease which has affected the neck muscles and is no longer able to lift his head by himself. The head falls forward in a typical manner associated with dropped head. This negatively affects activities of daily living like maintaining eye contact, eating, walking safely, watching tv and using a computer, as well as driving. Using the dropped head band or cap helps raise his head making these and other daily activities possible.

It is a one piece, comfortable stretch fabric with a hook and loop fastener. The user can put it on and remove it themselves independently and is comfortable to wear for hours at a time. The band keeps it’s head support for the entire time the band is worn and is easy to use. It uses an elastic material and the a Velcro overlap and fits a wide range sizes. The cap is an alternative, and attractive additional method of use for a head support without chin pressure.

According to a 2019 Systematic Review in Clinical Spine Surgery, head support bracing is one of the proposed first line treatment strategies, with surgery typically regarded as a secondary treatment in patients with refractory symptoms.
