Kits For Mounting Headrests To A Soft Wheelchair Backrest

These are softback wheelchair headrests that can be mounted to the handlebars or the canes of a wheelchair for those who do not have a wheelchair with a wood or metal bracket in the back. Most wheelchair headrests will fit, including the savant wheelchair headrest. This provides a great solution for those who can not hook up a headrest to a wheelchair with a cloth or vinyl back and avoids having to purchase a new wheelchair. The savant uses the standard or multi-axis hardware along with either the cane headrest mount or the handle headrest mount.

softback wheelchair headrests

This helps solve the problem of getting a good wheelchair headrest for your softback wheelchair. Something we have worked very hard to solve, since it is a frequently asked question. Prior to these solutions, the only way to get a headrest like the savant to fit a softback wheelchair was to purchase a new one or have it modified.

Is it the best solution? No. Why? Because softback wheelchair headrests are not as stable as hardware that mounts to a solid back chair. The handlebar mounting hardware is the least stable, but it is easy to remove it with just 2 knobs to unscrew. The cane mounts are more stable. Will the handlebar mounts get in the way of pushing the chair? Sometimes; it depends on the model, with some being able to mount in front of the grips. In general, it is fine for general mobility; in the house, transferring in vehicles and pushing around some. If you are planning to do a lot of pushing, go with the cane mount.

Note: we often combine different manufacturer items, so give us about a week to get these together to ship, especially when ordered with headrest mounting hardware and/or headrests. For basic application, the mounts are best paired with the control molded headrests and the 3 option hardware mount.

basic instructions

Cane Mount Instructions

The cane mount is assembled by means of clamps which must be mounted to the back frame tube uprights. Please order the clamps separately and state the diameter of the uprights.

First attach the clamps to the wheelchair. Remove the socket head cap screws and fix the clamps to the uprights. Place the U-hooks into the clamps. Make sure that both O-rings are located within the clamp. Mount the two clamps at the same height (fig. 1).

For assembling the cane mount to the wheelchair (fig. 2), loosen the four set screws (7) on the slider assembly (3) to allow width adjustment. Place the slider assembly over the U-hooks (2) and adjust the width until the receiving bushings fit over the two hooks. Tighten the set screws. Also tighten the screws of the clamps. Tighten the hand knobs (6) to attach the slider assembly firmly in place (fig. 2).

For attaching the headrest hardware to the cane mount, the headrest hardware’s mounting bracket attaches to the T-nuts (5) with the oval head screws provided (1) (fig. 2). Assembly and adjustment instructions for the hardware are included with that equipment. Adjustment: Height can be adjusted by loosening the clamps and sliding the assembly up and down the uprights. The mount can be adjusted backwards and forwards (in the sagittal plane) by loosening the clamps and rotating the U-hooks or clamps. The slider assembly should not come in contact with the patient. This adjustment is useful to accommodate slack in the upholstery due to wear.

Handle Mount Instructions

Use a thread-locking compound and tighten the star grips (fig. 3).

For attaching the headrest hardware to the kit, the headrest hardware’s mounting bracket attaches to the T-nuts (1) with the oval head screws provided (6) (fig. 3). Assembly and adjustment instructions for the hardware are included with that equipment.
