Offering powerful neck pain relief, the neck stretcher is a traction device with a comfortable application by using a force that is applied to the surface of the head that is evenly distributed to all areas of the head.
What Is The Neck Stretcher?
It is an inflatable traction unit that provides gradual decompression of the cervical spine. Inflation is accomplished by air pressure. The device consists of 4 bellows or circular air cushions that surround the neck, with an air bulb pump that has a screw cap closure and rubber hose lines. The bellows are made from a silk like material with a velour type surface to increase comfort and reduce skin chaffing. It weighs less than 1 pound and is 100% portable. This portability feature makes it easy to use for relief at home, the office or when travelling.
The Neck Stretcher applies a comfortable stretch to the cervical spine. The comfort permits greater traction forces in order to decompress the cervical spine, which can mean a reduction in the amount of time that decompression needs to be applied in order to achieve results. As little as 10 minutes of time can produce better outcomes in the management of neck pain for some individuals.
Comfort & Control
The reason it is so comfortable is because the traction force that is applied to the cervical spine is evenly distributed to all areas of the head and around the shoulders. The head contact is almost like laying your head on a pillow. A neck traction device should not place too much pressure on one or more areas of the head, like the ears, jaw, or sensitive parts of the back of the skull, because uneven forces may create discomfort that enough decompression force may not be able to be applied to get the desired results. You have complete control of the traction by using the air bulb.
Benefits Of The Neck Stretcher
By using 4 layers for better comfort and traction force, the amount of decompression can be increased significantly which may improve results dramatically. The discs in the neck have a positive internal pressure ranging from 10 to 35 pounds and are made up of a tougher annulus fibrosis, which surrounds a soft nucleus pulposis. Due to injuries such as whiplash or degenerative wear and tear like arthritis, the soft, inner part of the disc may break through the outer annulus and cause a disc herniation that can place pressure on sensitive nerves, causing neck pain or even pain radiating into the shoulders, arms and hands. This is why the neck stretcher is so valuable.
By taking pressure off the discs through decompression, it can reduce disc pressure enough to lessen the herniation that may be pressing or pinching a nerve. This can help reduce or even eliminate neck pain symptoms in some cases. With continued use, the neck stretcher can also help to increase the height of degenerated discs. Because the discs have no direct blood supply, they receive their nutrition by absorbing nutrients. By using the neck stretcher in an on and off manner, it can help nurture the discs for better healing. Increasing the height of the disc space can help improve flexibility of the neck.
The neck stretcher should not be used for recent (acute) injuries like strains and sprains, severe cases of torticollis or a recent onset of neck pain. It should not be used with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. compression of the spinal cord, infections or open wounds, malignancy or when it aggravates symptoms. Efforts should be taken to have neck pain symptoms assessed by a health care professional and therapy directed to reduce high levels of inflammation that can result from acute musculoskeletal conditions. Then, traction may be gradually applied to tolerance or a comfortable level that is controlled by the user. Using the neck stretcher for 8 – 10 minutes over several weeks is a reasonable approach, or follow the advice of your doctor/therapist.
Using The Neck Stretcher
The neck stretcher may be used while standing, sitting, reclining and even lying down with a small pillow under the head. Place it around your neck having the 4 bellows open in the front to avoid pressure on the front of the neck and chin. Then, connect the 3 hook/loop closures. Make sure the air bulb cap is in the closed position and the blocker valve on the tube is open, then inflate to the desired level of traction decompression to achieve a comforting stretch for 5 to 10 minutes during the first use. After it is inflated to the desired level, close the blocker valve on the tube to avoid any leakage of air during the treatment session. The amount of time may be gradually increased to 20 or 30 minutes once you are comfortable with using the neck stretcher and how it feels.
You should not feel any discomfort or pain. In fact, when the traction force is increased, some may experience immediate pain relief, although this typically occurs in 30 – 40% of those experiencing chronic neck pain. Usually, relief is achieved with long term use and in conjunction with other methods to help decrease pain and increase function.
To remove the neck stretcher after a therapy session, open the blocker valve on the tube, unscrew the lock cap on the air bulb, and this allows a slow release of the air pressure, then undo the 3 hook and loop closures. To increase product life and avoid damage, do not forcefully push the air out. With careful attention and correct use, the neck stretcher should last years, however, it is an inflatable product and misuse involving sharp objects, pets, children and leaving it inflated while not using for extended periods can cause damage not covered under the 30 day warranty for defects. It is a personal product that comes in contact with the skin, hair and possibly saliva, therefore, it is not a returnable item unless defective. We do not provide used devices that may be contaminated, posing heath concerns. Therefore, if you are not sure, don’t buy.
