Carbon Cover: Reduced Friction = Increased Comfort

Carbon Cover Savant

The cover is attached to the Savant – so it’s just like the regular version, except the cover is easily wipeable (for infection control) and “low friction” for easier movement. Durable and low-shear material that can be easily wiped with a cleaning solution or disinfectant

The headrest incorporates a headband which is utilized to support the front of the head, preventing head drop for those with poor motor control of the head and neck muscles. Employs a distinctive steel based core, permitting a variety shapes for customizing without the need for a tool – just bend and shape by hand to desired shape.

It may be used without the headband if not necessary. There are Side Extension Pads that can be used instead of the headband.

The clamps provide an easy method for rapid release of the headband or precise adjustments. The upper side padding effectively supports the head to the sides. Middle padding uses a shape designed for extra comfort for the back of the ears. The lower padding give an additional measure of support and comfort to the base of the skull – suboccipital region. Padding affords exceptional comfort as they incorporate a gel which is very soft. All this and covered in a soothing, yet durable and easy to clean lycra and nylon combination fabric material.

The lower two arms of the Savant are a softer steel than the upper two arms. They are meant to be shaped by hand to contour to a person’s head shape (to distribute pressure) and the upper arms are the main support arms to rigidify the shape and position the head.

The Savant Headrest comes with a small bag that contains the screws for attaching the ring of the mounting hardware to the headrest. There are also caps included in the bag for people who don’t use the headband, so they can remove the headband clips and pop the caps into the screw holes (to make it look more finished/hide the screw holes).

Please Note: The Savant is not waterproof, and does have a steel core. While the core is fairly “sealed”, when used on a shower chair, it will begin to rust. We do not recommend this headrest for shower chairs / water therapy for this reason.

Also, if you are using a 3/4 inch hardware ball mount for Whitmyer headrests or the 5/8 inch for Stealth (not all Stealth’s are 5/8), you would need the Whitmyer Adapter unless you are purchasing new hardware for the Savant. We also have adapters for Snug Seat (R82) headrest/hardware

Testimonial

“You can see from the pictures of Paul just why we love the Savant headrest. I am a physiotherapist and actually do seating at work and I appreciate that if the head is in alignment, the rest of the body works much better.

Anyway, with the headrest Paul can see where he’s going and relate to his environment and everyone else. He attends a Young Adult Day Support Program and everyone there was thrilled to see his face. He has difficulty speaking and swallowing. Having his head up right helps the speech, driving and general function. We do have to remove the band when he is eating because of the choking risk, it is necessary to tilt his chin down to swallow without aspirating.

For me, the biggest relief is as I said driving down the Deerfoot route through Calgary. I guess I could have taken more pictures but I hate to emphasize Paul’s limitations to him. He is in a tilt recline chair. With traditional headrests, the head rest is there but his head is not in it very often. When he reclines if we were lucky his head landed in the head rest but did not stay in it for long, it would roll out to his left. This meant he couldn’t be left alone at home, or in the wheelchair van he was actually in danger of breaking his neck with the bouncing of the van and his head hanging off the head rest to the side.

His head still slips out of the Savant when he reclines fully but I can’t see how this could be avoided with the tilt/recline. However, when he does unrecline, his head slips back in! Also, the Savant headrest has taught him to press his head back into the head rest instead of pulling forward. (As a therapist I have experienced that 80% of patients tend to pull forward in the wheelchair instead of relaxing back.) With using this head rest Paul is actually starting to relax back.”
