This is a unique pillow that is designed to properly support the head and neck when back sleeping and side sleeping. Most people sleep in the center of their pillow when they sleep on their backs, the center of our posture med orthopedic pillow is designed specifically for back sleeping with a special neck roll incorporated into the pillow for superior comfort and support. When side sleeping, the sides of the pillow are designed to support the neck and shoulder with increased height.
Orthopedic Pillow Sizing
The Posture Med Orthopedic Pillow comes in 3 sizes: small, medium and large. The width of all sizes is 24 inches and the side heights are; small - 3.5 inches | medium - 4.5 inches | large - 5.5 inches. You should consider your size and build in choosing a size. You can also measure to get an idea for proper size. Have someone assist and measure your left shoulder. Stand Facing the person who is measuring you, arms down to your sides. Hold the ruler to the base of the neck. Keep the ruler level across the shoulder area. Feel for the arm bone ignoring any muscle beyond the bone on the end of the shoulder. Compare size on the ruler, above the end of the arm bone with the diagram to size your orthopedic pillow.
The unique combination of therapeutic and memory foam in the posture med orthopedic pillow creates a softness and support which allows for an extremely comfortable, yet supportive nights sleep. We use a therapeutic foam base with a soft and accommodating memory foam neck roll and side sleeping areas.
Symptoms resulting from incorrect neck posture due sleeping on a pillow which does not provide proper support can be neck pain and stiffness, loud snoring, tingling/numbness in the hand or arm and headaches. The orthopedic pillow helps alleviate this by cradling the neck and head in an appropriate back and side sleeping posture.
If the head is too high or too low in relation to the rest of the body, the neck can be placed under stress. Similar problems can occur if the head is allowed to roll sideways when sleeping on your back. This causes an imbalance in the soft tissue structures such as the muscles, tendons, ligaments and discs , as well as vertebral misalignment. Over time, this imbalance can lead to neck problems like muscle spasm, neck stiffness, headaches and arthritis. The orthopedic pillow is a great solution to this common problem.

Orthopedic Pillow Doctors Note:
This is a nice pillow from Posture Med and I am very impressed with the comfort and stability. The foam materials are high quality and made in the United States, not a cheaper quality import. I use the Posture Med Contour Pillow for my condition which is chronic degenerative disc disease. When I have an acute flare-up of my condition or when I am having higher than normal levels of pain, I use the Posture Med Orthopedic Pillow. I have found those who say this is the only pillow they can sleep with. The superior materials and design make this a stable and comfortable orthopedic pillow, recommended by many spinal surgeons to aid in post-surgical recovery.
A common question is how this pillow differs from the therapeutic pillow? The answer is that it provides less forceful positioning, greater comfort due to a breathable memory foam neck roll and side sections, is more stable and is lighter and easier to maneuver. Additionally, it does not have the extension piece that goes down the spine, which some find uncomfortable. The latter feature, plus the use of memory foam also makes changing positions easier. These types of pillows need conscious changing of positions, since there are separate areas for back and side sleeping and the posture med orthopedic pillow, with its 45 degree angle incline on the side sections allows for easy transitioning.
On your back: With no firm support, your head and neck are prone to being pushed forward. Your neck is stretched out of alignment. This creates neck, back and shoulder pain, headaches and increases the chances of snoring.
On your side: Your neck and head are too easily stretched out of alignment because a traditional pillow is too low. Your spine is not kept level which can aggravate neck, back and shoulder problems.
Achieving correct support without an orthopedic pillow can be a problem since back and side sleeping are the preferred position for most individuals, one pillow usually does not support correct height when changing positions. When changing from the back to the side position, the head needs to be slightly higher to avoid distortion of the neck due to the shoulder. This is evident when some individuals will consciously or subconsciously place a hand or part of the arm under the pillow to balance this out when side sleeping.
In the back sleeping position, the head not only needs to be supported at the right height, but prevented from tilting forward and restricting air passages which can cause snoring, or from rolling to the side which can put rotational stress on the neck resulting in muscle soreness and joint pain. The upper back is naturally supported when the neck is properly aligned.
Customizing The Pillow
The orthopedic pillow can be customized to fit your needs. Sometimes, requirements after surgery need to be specified by the surgeon or therapist. This should be planned in advance and takes about 2 weeks. The custom pillow will not fit the pillowcase, however, a standard one can be used. We also can customize the pillow for customers. This is typically done to provide increased head stability. Some conditions like post-surgery or advanced cases of arthritis require minimal movement of the head while back sleeping. The pillow can be customized to keep the head more stable by bringing the side pieces closer and/or having them shaped more square and extend higher. The neck roll can be made higher - the pillow can be turned upside down to eliminate the neck roll if needed. There is an extra cost for customization.
