Maternity Support Belt |
| Neck Pain Relief |
Maternity Support BeltSupport and comfort for the expectant mother. The maternity support belt helps provide relief for strained muscles and ligaments by transferring the weight of the abdomen to the spine. The elastic construction helps relieve pressure on the pelvis while supporting the abdomen, while the soft, comfortable hook and loop front pad provides additional lift. ![]() Studies show 50-90% of pregnant women experience back pain during pregnancy. Risk factors for pregnancy and back pain include advanced maternal age, previous history of back pain and the number of prior pregnancies. Despite common belief, there is no relationship between back pain and the size of the baby or weight gained during pregnancy. An exercise program before pregnancy can reduce the risk of back pain during pregnancy. The reasons for maternity related back pain are unclear, however, hormones that relax ligaments can cause a change in biomechanics, displacing the center of gravity forward which produces anterior pelvic tilt and increased back curvature. A maternity back support may help some women. I have treated women throughout their pregnancy and achieved good results with gentle, biomechanically oriented techniques. According to a study in Spine. 1994 April 15;19(8):894-900, it was shown that reduction of pregnancy related posterior pelvic pain by a support belt was experienced by 82% of the women with posterior pelvic pain. Around 30 to 45% of women continue to have back pain after their pregnancy. Risk factors include more severe pain during pregnancy and failure to lose weight gained during pregnancy. Additionally, the way a mother carries her baby is also a factor - see safe lifting technique. For additional comfort, see our maternity body pillow.
