Herbs can help with healing of neck pain and are good for acute and chronic problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints

Most topical pain relief products contain one or more herbs as active ingredients which work as an analgesic and counter-irritant disrupting pain signals. These produce the cooling and/or warming sensations and can effect local blood circulation.

• Menthol applies to the skin selectively stimulates nerve endings sensitive to cold, producing a sensation of coolness, and also has a local analgesic effect.
• Methyl Salicylate is the primary constituent in Oil of Wintergreen, a naturally fragrant oil. This chemical relative of aspirin also relieves the inflammation that causes pain and dilates blood vessels.
• Camphor is a penetrating aromatic herb distilled from camphor wood and has a warming property. It alleviates pain, removes swelling, promotes blood circulation and is commonly used topically for contusions, sprains and traumatic injuries.
• Capsaicin is extracted from red chili peppers and is the substance that makes chili peppers hot. It is used for pain relief by reducing substance P, which is found at nerve endings and is involved in transmitting neuralgic and arthritic pain signals to the brain. Pain relief is not instantaneous after application as it is the cumulative depletion of substance P over a period of weeks that brings the full effect.

While these topical herbal agents are commonly used in products, it is the specific herbal formula that promotes healing properties as the herbs synergistically to produce a desired effect. Other herbs in a fromula may enhance blood circulation effects and/or promote healing of muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. Remember that any topical herbal preparation may be irritating to the skin in sensitive individuals.

I frequently use herbs for healing in the form of a pain patch for acute injury or chronic pain conditions. These are applications which are infused with herbs are a convenient way to apply healing herbs to an affected area without any mess associated with lotions, gels, creams and liniments. The herbs mold to the injured area and penetrate the tissues. One application can last for up to 8 hours without the need to reapply. They are not messy, easy to apply and can be taken anywhere! Do not use with a heating pad and, at first, test the area after a short while to check for skin sensitivity. You may want to remove the hair from certain areas before application as they may be sticky and painful to remove. Additionally, like many topical herbal preparations, they carry a significant medicinal odor. Our herbal liniment is great for massage and to compliment healing of bruises, sprains and strains. I find the liniment to be effective and with a pleasant odor.

Additional healing herbs useful for neck problems. Joint Relief Capsules combine Glucosamine and Chondroitin with powerfull herbs that help relieve pain and heal damaged joints. Back Boost contains pain relieving herbs which are good for neck and back pain relief. Membrell is not an herbal preparation, however, it is a natural eggshell membrane source of joint supplementation and I very highly recommend it and use it personally every day!

The following herbal formulas are taken internally, we use Muscle & Joint Injury Pills, Herbal Neck Formula, Back Pain Herbal Remedy and an Anti Aging Herbal Formula. These herbal formulas are meant to be used in conjunction with other healing regiments and are not very effective as a single therapy approach, therefore, we no longer recommend them based on poor individual results.
